William Matthew Vazquez still has the key to the city as the first baby born at then Boca Raton Community Hospital 25 years ago.
He brought the key to Boca Raton Regional Tuesday to mark the occasion. Isabella Madeline Vazquez came into the world at 4:04 p.m. Mom is Courtney Moore, and their daughter weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces, the proud dad said.
“When I was born, we made the paper and there was a video,” he said about his birth on Sept. 7, 1993. Then Mayor Bill T. Smith presented the family with the key.
“It must have made my birth extra special for them,” he said. “It made me feel more connected.”
He even volunteered at the hospital as a freshman at American Heritage School.
The family lost their dad there in 2008, and Vazquez brought his smiling photo to the hospital room. New grandmother Anna Gaita has been visiting.
Now Vazquez works at Louie Bossi’s Italian Ristorante in Boca. He has been enjoying the well wishes and gifts from co-workers and customers.
But nothing can match having a new daughter, he said. “All I feel is joy looking at my beautiful baby.”
The hospital is more than 50 years old. Toppel Family Place maternity care was added after the hospital was created, according to Boca Regional.
