Audiences flip for “Funny Girl” star at the Wick Theatre

You have to admire an actress who takes on Barbra Streisand’s famous Fannie Brice portrayal in “Funny Girl.”

Streisand made the 1968 role her own after the Broadway musical run. So when Stephanie Maloney appears on the Wick Theatre stage as a young Fannie, you have to give her credit for trying.

Wick audiences are largely New York and New Jersey theatergoers used to off- or on Broadway. So expectations run high and standing ovations are hard to come by.  A full house on a weeknight gave Maloney a standing ovation by the time the musical’s cast took its bows.  She gets that reaction nearly every show, according to a theater spokeswoman.

Her performance is so convincing, I looked up what really happened to the Brice, Nick Arnstein affair when I got back from the theater.

If you haven’t seen it yet, “Funny Girl” runs through Feb. 24. The score is by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill.  Nick Arnstein is played by George Dvorsky, who was Daddy Warbucks in the Wick’s “Annie.”  The show was the fan favorite this season, founder and CEO Marilynn Wick announced earlier.
