An homage to Broadway musicals and Gershwin songs, “Crazy for You” opens in Boca through April 14.
“We have the scenery from the national tour,” said The Wick Theater’s director Norb Joerder.
“Crazy for You” opened on Broadway in 1992. It won the Tony Award for best musical and ran for 1,622 performances.
The Gershwin songs are plucked from earlier scores and already familiar to audiences. Think “Embraceable You,” and “I Got Rhythm.”
Joerder calls the production numbers lavish. “There’s as much dancing in the show as ‘42nd Street,’ ” he said. There’s even dancing on cars and stairways, Follies-style showgirls and theatrical fog. It’s a fast-paced show laced with funny one-liners, he added. The cast of 28 includes two veteran actors.
Matt Loehr is making his debut at the Wick. On Broadway, he appeared in “The Book of Mormon,” “The Producers,” “Chitty Chitty Bang,” and revivals of “Evita” and “Promises, Promises,” among others. He’s a four-time Carbonell Award winner for “Me & My Girl,” “The Music Man,” “Hello Dolly” and “Crazy For You,” all at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.
Julie Kleiner returns to musical comedy at The Wick. Among her credits are other musicals regionally and the Broadway national tour of “Big.”
