Avery Sommers co-stars in Delany sisters’ play in Boca

The Delany sisters lived past the century mark and their story as civil rights trailblazers opens on stage in Boca this week.

Avery Sommers, the well-known actress with Broadway chops co-stars in “Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years.”

Karen Stephens is her co-star in the run Jan. 11 through Feb. 3 as part of Primal Forces’ productions at Sol Theatre.

“The play is very powerful and acutely timely because it drives home in a vital and personal way that political views on racism and feminism that are still being battled today, and yet the sisters still maintain heart and humor,” said Genie Croft, the director. “The New York Times said ‘Having Our Say’ is ‘the most provocative and entertaining family play in a long time.’ ”

The play shares the oral history of the sisters’ lives through the Harlem Renaissance, Paul Robeson, and the Jim Crow era. Children of a former slave, Bessie became a dentist and Sadie a teacher. Their story became a New York Times bestseller and was adapted for the stage.
