The 39th anniversary of Earth Day’s today, Monday April 22. Considered the birth of the environmental movement, it took another generation to catch on.
Even now, cities to our south are Earth Day central: There’s sunrise yoga in Miami; 5 and 10Ks in Fort Lauderdale and a cleanup on Hollywood beach.
In Boca, three events are next weekend.
Boca Raton Children’s Museum’s Earth Day! includes a recycled fashion show, bounce house, art projects and live entertainment. The celebration’s 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday April 27. Admission is $10 per person and includes museum admission.
The children’s museum is at 498 Crawford Blvd., behind city hall at the end of the street.
Daggerwing Nature Center’s Celebrate Earth Day is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday April 27. Admission is free. Activities include live animal encounters, crafts, environmental science demos, a butterfly plant sale and a ladybug release.
Daggerwing is at 11435 Park Access Road in west Boca’s South County Regional Park.
The Great American Cleanup is Saturday and Boca Save Our Beaches is on board. They’re asking volunteers to help collect debris from South Beach Park from 9 to 11 a.m. The park is just north of Palmetto Park Road on A1A. Pre-registration is required.
The city’s Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is taking part in the Great American Cleanup from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Their signups are sold out, according to their web site. So, to participate, see the list of other cleanups at Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful.
Town Center at Boca Raton is taking part in Earth Day today through Sunday April 28. The mall is offering a free, reusable shopping tote at guest services. That’s a trade-in for a disposable shopping bag, and as long as tote supplies last.
The mall has a tiered ballgown on display. It’s made from recycled paper shopping bags from 55 mall retailers.
