Floaty, floor-length maxi dresses are the new ‘little black dress’ for summer.
Alice and Olivia, Zimmerman, Tanya Taylor and Ramy Brook are among designers showing these dresses in airy fabrics splashed with whimsical prints, florals and polka dots.
They range from casual to dressier styles with fabrics that show sparkle with glittery threads.
Many are part of ensembles with matching skirts and tops. They can also be paired with T-shirts or a button-down blouse tied at the waist or tucked in with a wide belt.
That’s the advice of Stacy Atwater, area marketing director for Saks Fifth Avenue. She calls the dresses “versatile.”
They’re the go-to piece for weekend wear from brunch to baby showers and even for weddings, she said. And anyone can wear them.
“This floor-grazing and versatile dress comes in a variety of styles to fit just about any body and any height,” she said.
Price points vary. Most of the dresses we saw at Saks were in the $350 to $440 range. A handful are on sale.
Recommended accessories are escadrilles, chunky wedges or strappy heels. Atwater even favors the fashion sneaker and slides with a clear foot wrap.
California chic is a colorful line of beaded bracelets with a spiritual charm by Sydney Evan.
“A trendy handbag or clutch, drop earrings and, voila! You’re ready to conquer summer,” Atwater said.
