Golfer Gary Nicklaus will return to the pros in Boca Raton. He’ll play in the Oasis Championship Feb. 4 to 10 at the Old Course at Broken Sound, the tour has announced. The son of golf icon Jack Nicklaus, he stepped away from the PGA and resumed his amateur standing in 2007.
When Nicklaus turned 50 on Jan. 15, he became eligible to play on the PGA TOUR Champions. His father turned 79 on Jan. 21. “This is something I’ve been thinking about for several years,” he said in a statement announcing his debut. “When I took time off after becoming an amateur, it’s like my game matured.”
Will his famous Dad show up to watch him play over that weekend? Hard to know, but Jack Nicklaus already has a Boca connection. He and his design team are completely redoing the Via Mizner course in Boca Del Mar. It’s planned as a private club for The Residences at Mandarin Oriental Boca Raton. The hotel and condos are under construction on Federal Highway.
