Now home buyers can E file for Homestead at closing

Starting today, Monday March 18, home buyers can E file at the closing for a Homestead Exemption.

“Right after you close, you can go to our web site. But you have to be a Florida resident,” said Palm Beach County Property Appraiser Dorothy Jacks. “There’s only one exemption per person or married couple.”

Some 11,400 residents already filed for a Homestead Exemption online. But before, they had to wait for the deed to appear. That could take up to three weeks, Jacks said. “Now we’re holding it and we’re going to wait for the deed transaction.”

Some 13,300 residents showed up in person at one of four service centers. The closest is the south county center in Delray Beach. Some 3,000 residents mailed it in.

What if you or your real estate professional aren’t sure how to E file for the exemption?

“You can call or e-mail us, and we’ll walk you through it,” Jacks said. Call 561-355-2866 or email myexemption@pbcgov.org

How do you know if you’re qualified as a Florida resident? “If you have obtained a Florida driver’s license. You register your car and you vote here,” Jacks said.

“You can be brand new. The only time you have to register is once,” she added. “Now you can go to our web site and start filling out the Homestead Exemption application.”
