Kids still like real dictionaries, even with spell check on their computers.
That was the takeaway from Rotary Club Boca Raton Sunrise’s annual dictionary presentation to third graders.
Three west Boca elementary schools were chosen for this low-tech approach to teaching kids language skills. They need new words for homework now and later for jobs.
Club volunteers organized under Brennan Rimer partnered with a point person at each school.
This year the schools included Hammock Pointe, Sandpiper Shores, and Whispering Pines.
At Hammock Pointe, Rotary volunteers included past club president Doyle Dally and Ellen Joy Vahab, who runs the Youth Activity Center.
Nine classes of third-graders were ushered into a reading room there to receive “A Student’s Dictionary.” “Can we keep them?” one student asked.
