Hurricane season officially begins on Saturday, June 1st.
To help get you ready, the Legislature passed the 2019 Florida Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday that began Friday, May 31stand runs until Thursday, June 6th. Stock up on qualifying disaster preparedness supplies. For more information and a list of qualifying items, visit floridarevenue.com/disasterprep
Another tip is to pick up one or two items each week, so the burden is not so great on your wallet.
Palm Beach County’s Emergency Management Department has put together a thorough website that can help you prepare by making a plan, registering for a special needs shelter or pet friendly shelter if necessary, or helping to determine if you live in a mandatory evacuation zone. The website is: http://discover.pbcgov.org/publicsafety/dem/Pages/Hurricane.aspx
Palm Beach County also has a free emergency app, PBC Dart, which is available for IOS and Android. The Palm Beach County Disaster Awareness and Recovery Tool (PBC DART) provides residents with information and tools used to prepare for a disaster as well as real time storm surge evacuation areas, flood zones, shelter locations, grocery and building supply stores and gas stations with emergency generators.
Finally, Florida’s Division of Emergency Management is available to help with a plan before and after a storm. Their website is: https://www.floridadisaster.org/planprepare/.
Just because June 1st is here, does not mean a hurricane is coming next week. While we must remain vigilant throughout hurricane season we also must not panic – but always be prepared. My office will be here to assist throughout the season with state resources because as we have learned from past storms assistance will be needed afterwards.
I sincerely hope it is a quiet year for Florida – some may say we’ve earned it after the devastation of Cat 5 Hurricane Michael. But Mother Nature doesn’t take prior years into consideration.
As always, it is my honor to serve you in the Florida House. If ever I may be of service to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.
