Luigi Silvestri got emotional at his retirement party after three decades as a barber to the pols.
Former and present mayors Steven Abrams and Scott Singer were among those gathered to salute him. “His clientele of elected officials were not elected because of good looks, but good haircuts,” Singer read from the proclamation Sunday.
“I’ve been coming to Luigi every three weeks for 33 years,” said Abrams, also a former county commissioner. “We are sad to see you go, but excited for what your future holds.”
A round of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fella” choked him up. But Silvestri thanked everyone for the accolades.
The salon at 4251 N. Federal Highway is under new ownership but keeping the Luigi name. His younger brother Rusty Silvestri, 72, is staying with the rest of the staff.
Silvestri said he’s been cutting hair since he was 14. He’ll be 79 in May. The Lorain, Ohio native moved to Boca in 1986. Now he and his wife Jean are headed to Gainesville to live with their son and family. Paul Silvestri is head athletic trainer and associate director of sports health at the University of Florida.
“My grandson won’t let anyone but Poppie touch his hair,” Silvestri said.
