The Mayors Ball dances into season

The Mayors Ball picked a-rockin’ band and an outside, waterfront terrace for the first black-tie gala of the season.

It was fun to sit on the sidelines and watch 357 guests in gowns and tuxedoes make an entrance at Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club.  Arlene Herson and Rick Howard greeted arrivals on the red carpet and emceed this Rotary Club Downtown Boca Raton fundraiser.

Mayor Scott Singer and former mayors Susan Whelchel, Steven Abrams, and Bill Smith were introduced with spouses. Rotary Downtown president Michael Walstrom in a spiffy white dinner jacket did the welcome.

George Long visionary awards, named for Boca’s first mayor, went to Boca Raton Regional Hospital CEO Jerry Fedele. Tara Auclair picked up Modernizing Medicine. Best Foot Forward Foundation co-founders Debbie Ellman and Donna Biase accepted for helping foster kids get an education.

Honorary chairman Bobby Campbell started the live auction by pledging $200,000 toward the club’s health and wellness initiatives.

Auction items included Fashion Week in Paris with haute designer Christian Louboutin. A $4,000 handbag of his was in the upscale silent auction.

But once the music started, the Steve Chase Band had everyone out on the dance floor. It was that kind of night.

The event was sold out before invitations went out. Office Depot was the main sponsor. Boca Raton Airport sponsored the journal and airport authority chairman Mitch Fogel was there.
