Progress report on Via Mizner’s Nicklaus golf course

You can see the 14th hole off Military Trail, a peek at Penn-Florida’s Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course going up along Palmetto Park Road and Military Trail.

In fact, the private course will be ready for play in the fall, said Frank Weed, Penn-Florida’s vice president of development and construction.

Via Mizner Golf & City Club will offer unparalleled amenities to members, owners at The Residences Mandarin Oriental Boca Raton and guests of Mandarin Oriental, Boca Raton, the hotel next door. The new buildings are underway between Mizner Boulevard and East Camino Real on Federal Highway in downtown. The City Club is a second venue for members, located on levels 4 and 5 of the hotel.

Q: Is this a complete golf course rebuild, and is there a lake on the course now?

A: We used the same land. It’s a new course with classical design features including new irrigation and drainage systems and more lakes with slopes and mounds to enhance play. We spent over $1 million to properly develop five additional acres of lakes to control all the water on the site.

Q: What about the greens?

A: In the next 45 days we will finish the grassing and Mother Nature will do the rest with help from our team. The grasses are Latitude 36 on the fairways and tees. It’s a new Bermudagrass hybrid Jack Nicklaus recommends. The greens will be TifEagle Bermudagrass.

Q: Will you demolish and rebuild the clubhouse?

A: We are creating a campus-style club. We’ll have various dining venues, a pro shop, complete locker rooms, and an extensive fitness center with a resort-type pool and lap pool. A performance training center will be on the driving range. Plus tennis, basketball and pickleball courts. We’re working on site plan approval. The present clubhouse will be demolished.

Q: Will the course be more challenging than the old Via Mizner course?

A: Jack Nicklaus ensures play is for all skills and ages. This is an 18-hole championship course with expert tees.

Q: How will membership work?

A:  This is a private members club. Residence buyers receive a multi-generational membership with their purchase [to the club] for them and their family.

Q: Will you extend membership to others if you find not enough people are using the course?

A: We haven’t set a membership cap. We will service all the members when they want to play and they will have the ability to schedule tee times in advance. We want to ensure their enjoyment.

Q: When will The Residences be ready for move in and who is buying them now?

A: We anticipate completion of The Residences in mid-to-late 2021. Our buyers are from communities in West Boca Raton, on the beach, or from the northeast. As far as golf, our Penn-Florida club team has more than 100 years’ experience in exclusive, high-end clubs, golf courses and resorts.

Owners will have access to the course before The Residences are finished.
