Raise the Bar Celebrity Bartending Challenge: Providing non-profit support and tackling issues of hunger and child welfare

The Junior League of Boca Raton partners with Rocco’s Tacos once more this year to host their fifth annual Celebrity Bartending Challenge, Raise the Bar, next Thursday, April 26th. Raise the Bar is one of the most popular fundraising events by the League benefiting the foundation’s Endowment Fund, which is responsible for the maintenance and operations of the Vegso Community Center, noted Reilly Glasser, Public Relations Co-Chair at the Junior League.

“Eight teams of two bartenders each ‘shake and pour’ drinks and compete to raise the most money using creative twists through attendance, sponsorships, and tips,” said Glasser. The event is designed to create a fun and interactive atmosphere that will both honor supporters of the League, which include some of Boca Raton’s local celebrities, as well as benefit the Endowment. Raise the Bar began as “as a way to ‘shake it up’” through a mixture of fun and support, observed Glasser.

How do these bartending celebrities get picked? Bartenders are recommended by the Endowment Board who select individuals based on who they feel are positively benefiting our community. Their community involvement is particularly meaningful since they are responsible for bringing attendees from companies they represent in addition to their numerous contacts around the community. “We look to our bartenders to rally their supporters to attend the event and tip big!” said Glasser.

Over 200 tickets were sold at last year’s Raise the Bar bartending challenge. While they are grateful for all contributions, told us, Glasser, “we are hopeful to beat last year’s record of $25,000!”

Rocco’s Tacos, which has been the event’s hosting location for the past five years, has generously donated their staff, liquor, wine and beer for the thrilling night. “Rocco is a phenomenal business owner who does his part to take care of his community,” noted Glasser. “He is very philanthropic and had a friendship with a prior Endowment Board member. The relationship has continued to flourish and grow.”

The 2018 Guest Bartenders include:

John Tolbert & Denise Zimmerman

Renata DeNegri & Lisa Bariso

Stacey Packer & Sara Nasca

Carrie Rubin & Lauren Johnson

Sal Saldana & Beth Rosenstein

Nic DeSiato & Jamie Rosemurgy

Heather McMechan & Dana Peller

Chef Patrick Duffy & Melanie De Vito

Instead of funding operating expenses, proceeds benefiting the Endowment Fund go directly to philanthropic projects that the Junior League supports, which current focus has been three-fold: tackling the issues of hunger, child welfare, and non-profit support. In addition, the funds raised from this event not only benefit JLBR but all of the community nonprofits who utilize the Vegso Community Center as well as those taking training and participating at events hosted at the center.

“Junior League of Boca Raton is here to make a difference in the lives of people in our community,” added Glasser. “Beyond our commitment to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers, part of our vision is to partner with and support fellow nonprofit. The Endowment Fund allows us to continue this meaningful work.”
