Spirit of Giving wants to fill Florida Atlantic University Stadium the morning of March 9 for the first Community Spirit Race. The run/walk will benefit 23 nonprofits so far, from Boca’s Police Athletic League to Girls on the Run.
“It’s the first race we’ve ever done like this and the first fundraising initiative for our nonprofits,” said Spirit executive director Sue Diener. “A lot of the smaller nonprofits can’t afford to do this. We’re offering them an opportunity to fund-raise without all the upfront expenses.”
This is a certified 5K with all the bells and whistles of a traditional walk/run. Runners Edge is overseeing the AccuChip Timed course and 5K run/walk or 1-mile run/walk at 7:30 a.m. Registration is $30 or $20 respectively and includes a T-shirt, bib and finisher medal. Prices goes up after March 4.
“They get $5 from every registration and everyone who registers gets to pick the charity of their choice. After that, they get 100 percent of their fundraising,” Diener said. “Some registrants have the option to add funds for a specific nonprofit. The charities can sell sponsorships, too.”
Supporters sign up as individuals. But prizes will go to the largest team, the biggest fundraiser and the largest family group, Diener said. Same day registration starts at 6:30 a.m.
The event will include a kids’ zone and fun run, a healthy breakfast and vendors providing health and safety information.
“What we need now is volunteers for everything from registration to cutting up fruit and passing out water,” Diener said. There’s a volunteer signup on the same link. Click on more.
